South India is famed for Indian Art and Temple architecture. The
history of the Tamil start well before 2000 Years. In the same time era
when the North was dominated by the Mauryan and Gupta empires, and other
medieval dynasties, the deep Souths history was being carved by the
Chera, Chola, Pandya and Pallava dynasties. The grandest of them all was
the Chola kingdom, reaching their zenith in the 10th Century, with
perhaps the first Naval fleet of any Indian king and Gupta empires, and
other medieval dynasties.
Infact, the Cholas were the great builders. The examples could be traced
out from the splendid monuments, hewn out of solid rock, still bear
testimony to the magnificent heritage of Dravidian architecture. The
temples of Thanvajur, Darasuram, Tirubuvanam, Tiruchirapalli are noted
for its beautiful sculpture, still bear witness to the splendour of
Chola architecture.
